What's in a name?
We're often asked why we're called Unhinged London. The simple answer is that the world we live in at the moment is unstable; all the freedoms we enjoyed have been derailed as we navigate our way through the Global Pandemic. Some say "the world has gone mad", and so in a world of madness, everyone is a little unhinged.
Do something different every day, something that makes you feel alive; unleash the rebel inside of you. That's the ethos behind Unhinged London.
We started with face masks.
Masks should be used as part of a comprehensive strategy of measures to suppress transmission and save lives; the use of a mask alone is not sufficient to provide an adequate level of protection against COVID-19.
There is so much written about face masks, both for and against. If you are reading this post, it is likely that you already believe in the benefits of wearing face coverings to help suppress the spread of COVID-19. We at Unhinged London, strongly believe that as part of an overall strategy to help protect the most vulnerable in society, everyone should wear face masks in confined areas where the spread of the disease is more likely.
When the disease took hold of the UK back in March 2020, the lack of PPE (personal protective equipment) was well documented. It was disgraceful to see our doctors, nurses and ancillary staff having to beg, borrow or reuse PPE while caring for our most vulnerable.
So we decided to help.
We started producing face masks for nurses at a dialysis unit in North West London and donated them to the staff on the ward.
Our intention wasn't for the masks to be used by staff with patients but for them to use the coverings while travelling to and from work to save the pitifully low stock of medical-grade face masks for use with patients.
We also donated masks to other front-line workers who help drive our buses, deliver our groceries and others that put themselves at risk with daily contact with the general public.
The feedback was incredible!
Our friends spoke about how comfortable the face masks were to wear, how easy it was to breath, how the masks could be adjusted to fit whatever size face they had.
So we produced a range of designs, perfected the product and started selling on Amazon.
How are Unhinged face masks produced?
All our face masks are hand-sewn in the UK by a team of freelance seamstresses who work to our pattern. Every mask is then visually inspected for defects and only dispatched to our customers around the world, once they have been quality assured.
It would have been all too easy to off-shore the production to the Far East. It would be have been cheaper.
But, we believe now is the time that we should do our bit and try and support small businesses who can help drive employment and in turn go some way to helping re-build our damaged economy.
How can you help?
If you believe in our mission, if you believe that face coverings help save lives, if you believe in supporting small businesses that support employment then why not buy a face mask and help us by spreading the word.
